Institute for Women's Policy Research
On the 29th of December,2004, the Institute for Women's Policy Research reported in a recent study that Washington State ranked one of the best in the nation in terms of gender equality. The study chose rankings based on five criteria: 1) Female political participation, 2) Employment and earnings, 3) Social and economic autonomy, 4) Access to sex education and family planning resources, and 5) General health. The top 5 are:
1. Vermont
2. Connecticut
3. Minnesota
4. Washington
5. Oregon
Beacon Hill Institute for Public Policy Research
On the 17th of November,2004, the Beacon Hill Institute for Public Policy Research at Suffolk University released its Metro Area and State Competitiveness Report 2004, which found that the Greater Seattle region is the most competitive region in the country with Washington State finishing third in the state rankings. The authors of the study define competitiveness as "the policies and conditions that ensure and sustain a higher level of per capita income and its continued growth." The report takes into account more than three dozen variables within eight categories, including government and fiscal policy, security, infrastructure, human resources, technology, business incubation, openness, and environmental policy. The study notes that Washington is known for its technology and its openness to trade.

University of Wisconsin
On the 1st of September,2004, the University of Wisconsin released a nationwide analysis of "America's Most Literate Cities." The study ranks the cities as "most literate" based on various measures of how many read and what they read. The information is compiled from Census data, newspaper circulation rates, magazine publishing, educational attainment levels, library resources and booksellers. Seattle ranked second on this list:
