Wedgwood was homesteaded in 1900, and named after Wedgwood China by a local builder's wife. Primarily a single-family residential community, this established neighborhood attracts homebuyers with homes graced with a touch of old-world charm, single-vehicle driveways and garages and often meticulous gardens.
Many residents have retired to this tree-lined neighborhood, though younger families are also moving into the area. The business district along 35th Avenue Northeast tends to lean away from chains, corporations, and franchises - instead supporting smaller, community-established businesses.
Wedgwood (sometimes spelled Wedgewood) was born of the housing boom of World War II, but its history reaches back to prehistoric times. Native Americans used the Wedgwood Rock as a landmark. In later years, picnickers, university students, climbers, and even hippies enjoyed it too. One of the farms in the neighborhood became the first P-Patch in Seattle.
