Wallingford has a distinct family feel, with its tree-lined streets, grand homes, cozy 1920's bungalows and a lively commercial district. The neighborhood is centrally located with clear boundaries: I-5 to the east, Lake Union to the south, Aurora Avenue to the west and Greenlake to the north. A collection of international-themed restaurants, interspersed with bookstores and gift shops, lines both sides of the neighborhood's commercial district along North 45th Street. Gasworks Park, located on Lake Union in Wallingford, is another favorite local hangout. Based around a former gas plant that was salvaged by the community, the park has spectacular views of Lake Union and downtown. The park's windswept hill is a favorite of kite enthusiasts and bicyclists and skaters enjoy easy access to the Burke-Gilman Trail, which runs through the park along the shores of Lake Washington and back towards Bothell, Woodinville and Redmond.

Wallingford is a community that cares about its future. Team Wallingford is the name of the neighborhood association that keeps an eye out for the development of this area. The Wallingford Center, a three-story wooden schoolhouse, is one example of how the community altered the course of the neighborhood's development, turning a neoclassical building -- formerly the Interlake Public School -- into shops and restaurants.

Seattle's landmark hamburger joint, Dick's Drive-In is located here, along with the city's only coffee brew pub. Part post-college crowd, part modest yuppie, part foreign transplant, part struggling family, Wallingford's residents and business owners have turned it into a fun, friendly place that's full of color and energy.

Median Prices: Homes $381,660; Condos $184,950
