Often described as youthful and vibrant, what the U-District is depends on which part you're talking about. Seattle's University District, home of the University of Washington since 1895, is located in the northeast section of the city, north of the Portage Bay part of Lake Union. The neighborhood actually encompasses several related communities: the small city that is the University of Washington, the youth-oriented culture of "the Ave," or University Way, its official name, and the stately single-family homes and modest bungalows north of campus.
The University of Washington covers more than one-third of the area called the University District. So it is no surprise that the more than 35,000 students who attend the University of Washington each year would be the neighborhoods strongest influence. An influence that is seen in the cultural and intellectual events--including lectures, film, concerts, and gatherings--that happen on and around campus.
Often referred to as the "U District", this area is undoubtedly one of the youngest communities in all of Seattle. The majority of the residents are students who rent and have a median age around 22 years. Incomes and housing values tend to be more moderate than elsewhere which would make sense in an area predominantly made up of students.
It is a neighborhood of restaurants, cafes, a renowned street fair, a farmer's market, and a few esteemed institutions such as the University Book Store, University Inn, the Meany Hotel, the Henry Art Gallery and the Burke Museum. The Ave or 45th is a popular place to hang out, shop and eat you can buy a CD ad pizza buy the slice or shop in a variety of import and specialty stores. The University Village, below the University, is a shopper's paradise and features a variety of more well-known and high end stores and restaurants complete with two Starbucks locations, one in the Barnes and Noble and one on the Village corner.
The University District has something for everyone, although for the most, it is an exciting place to go to school, and then move on.
