The Sand Point neighborhood - 2 miles north of the University of Washington - along the shores of Lake Washington. It is set among beautiful residential homes, a large park, and wonderful local shopping areas. However, it wasn't always this nice. Originally, it was a large swampy area dubbed "Mud Lake" until the Lake Washington Ship Canal (connecting Lake Washington to Lake Union) was opened and Lake Washington's water level dropped 8 feet, allowing the Sand point area to dry out and begin its development. At that point, King County bought Sand point for a landing strip and sold it to the federal government which used it as a U.S. Naval Air Station until 1991.
The Sand Point Peninsula is generally defined as the area bounded on the north by Northeast 95th Street, on the west by 35th Avenue Northeast and Lake City Way, on the south by Union Bay and on the east by Lake Washington and is made up of several neighborhoods.
View Ridge is an affluent area with immaculate lawns and views of the Cascades. The Children's Orthopedic Hospital on Sand Point Way is nationally recognized for its care of terminally ill children. The U.S. Department of Commerce - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Center - Northwest Regional Office is also located here. It is the largest federal research center and it studies weather and impact on coastlines; fisheries and hydropower; and habitat conservation.
Another neighborhood, Wedgwood, is located between Sand Point Way and a small business district on Northeast 75th Street and 35th Avenue Northeast. Homes and apartments are less expensive there, and many University of Washington students and staff live in Wedgwood.
The neighborhood is home to a strong Jewish community, including three synagogues.
A home in this neighborhood affords a quiet and peaceful setting away from the busy city environment, while still having easy and quick access to the hustle and bustle of downtown Seattle and surrounding neighborhoods. Direct access to the 25 mile Burke-Gilman Trail encourages outdoor enjoyment and alternative commuting.
Sand Point is home to two of Seattle's most popular parks, Matthews Beach and Magnuson Park - the former Navy facility and at 350 acres, Seattle's second largest park.
