About the Ravenna Neighborhood in Seattle

The tree-line streets of the Ravenna neighborhood, located just north of the University of Washington, could be described as the ideal family community. It is a wholesome and comfortable place to live.

Ravenna Park is one of Seattle's oldest parks. It was created by Ravenna Creek, which drained Green Lake and emptied into Union Bay. The creek started relatively shallow and deepened to a steep ravine.

The area around Ravenna Park was developed into a typical North Seattle cliché of middle-class houses on leafy streets interspersed by small-scale commercial clusters at major intersections. It remains so today, though soaring real-estate prices have pushed the class level upward. Ravenna features a variety of home styles including Tudors, bungalows and craftsman, with some homes east of Ravenna Park fortunate enough to have mountain, territorial and cityscape views.

With its active community association, people who live in Ravenna pride themselves on supporting those locally owned businesses that have been there for generations and providing the community with a variety of programs and special events. Unlike so many other areas in Seattle, there are no sex-shops in Ravenna, and not many chain businesses, but instead there are small bakeries and unique shops offering a more relaxed shopping experience. Fittingly, the neighborhood includes the home base of Seattle's only Volvo dealer.

The community is also very supportive of Bryant Elementary and many volunteers put hours into what is one of Seattle's largest elementary schools. The after-school program is also held in high regard, with classes ranging from cultural and ethnic arts, to languages, to music, to sports.

Ravenna is greatly influenced by the University of Washington which borders it to the south. Many employees and faculty live in the neighborhood and commute via bicycle on the Burke-Gilman Trail.

Median Prices: Homes $367,500; Condos $182,250
