Community isn't just a buzzword in the Phinney Ridge Neighborhood; it's something that the people who live there work hard to create. The neighborhood is known as one of those places where everyone knows your name.
Part of this strong community feeling is can be attributed to the Phinney Neighborhood Association who's goal is to recapture the spirit of neighborhood and to reestablish the social bonds that contribute to our well being and quality of life. Since 1980, Phinney and Greenwood neighbors, working with the PNA, have put their time and their hearts into events and activities that bring other neighbors together to build a sense of civic pride. The association sponsors classes and lectures; a unique Well Home Program tool borrowing library; coop preschools; and annual events like a wine tasting, family Halloween party and the Winter Festival and Crafts Fair.
The Phinney Ridge neighborhood is mainly made up of single-family homes with a mix of long time residents and young professionals. But the neighborhood is becoming a younger community as many of the older residents can't keep up with the maintenance of their homes or the rigors of climbing a lot of stairs.
Seattle's Phinney neighborhood lies mostly on a high ridge that separates Green Lake and Ballard. The neighborhood is generally defined as the area bounded on the north by North 80th Street, the west by Eighth Avenue Northwest and Third Avenue Northwest, the south by North 50th Street and the east by Aurora Avenue North.
It owes its name to Guy Phinney (1852-1893), a wealthy Scottish immigrant who developed a private estate that became Woodland Park (later Woodland Park Zoo).
Median Prices: Homes $425,000; Condos $277,475
