Sitting on a gentle rise of land starting at NW 75th Street and ending at NW 100th Street, the north Ballard suburb of Crown Hill is home to more than 7,000 residents. Sparsely settled until after the end of WWII when returning veterans built homes all across the country, Crown Hill soon became a well-populated extension to the communities of Ballard to the south, Loyal Heights to the west and Greenwood to the east.
The citizens of Ballard opened the Crown Hill Cemetery in this largely rural area in 1902 and the nearby Greenwood Cemetery was closed in 1907 when its inhabitants were removed to Crown Hill. In 1908 the Whittier school was built, drawing students from the north portions of Ballard and forcing students in Crown Hill to endure a long walk to get an education. In 1919 the Crown Hill Elementary School was built to meet the growing demand of residents in the area. The explosian of returning veterans from the war and demand for homes in the industry rich Seattle area completed the transformation of Crown Hill to a city.
Today Crown Hill is home to more than 7,000 residents who are very active in the upkeep of their neighborhood who have sponsored the conversion of several abandon lots into neighborhood parks. Possibly the jewel of Crown Hill would be Swanson's, a 5-acre nursery that is definitely a gardener's paradise. The homes in the area range from 1920's Tudors to 50's style ramblers with a few condominiums and apartments. This once sleepy rural area is fully integrated into the Seattle community but is still able to retain some of the small town charm and feel of years past.
Median Prices: Homes $298,975; Condos $250,000.
