The Ballard Neighborhood is located about 10 minutes Northwest of Downtown Seattle. Bordered by the Puget Sound to the West and Salmon Bay to the South, Ballard was the ideal place for the Scandinavian fishermen who founded the area. Since 1907, when Ballard was incorporated into the City of Seattle, it has managed to maintain many of its small town qualities. It continues to be the center of a unique combination of manufacturing and commercial fishing industries and recreational boating.
The nearby Fishermen's Terminal, which include the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Shilshole Marina, and Golden Gardens Park, attract tens of thousands of visitors each year. In recent years, "Old Ballard" has become a vibrant commercial district with unique shops, restaurants and music venues. It remains a "city within a city" with its own pace and special flavor that reminds us of a gentler era in Seattle history.
Ballard continues to honor its Nordic Heritage in a variety of ways including the annual Norwegian Constitution Day Parade on May 17 each year, the Nordic Heritage Museum, and the Bergen Place mural that was dedicated by the King and Queen of Norway in 1996.
The neighborhoods within Ballard are largely made up of Craftsman and Tudor homes with some 1950's brick styles sprinkled in for flavor. There are a variety of neighborhood parks as well as a strong community center and pool. The beautifully remodeled Ballard High School is a focal point of the area, while Market Street is the Main retail shopping area.
Through the years, one thing about Ballard has always remained the same: water is a part of life in Ballard. Whether it's waiting at the bridge while a ship goes through, enjoying a sailboat race off Shilshole, or dining on a delicious salmon dinner, the water is always there. And Ballard continues to celebrate its maritime connections.
