Spring is in the air! And along with the warmer weather and longer days, this time of year is often signified by the need to spring-clean.
Perhaps you need a little extra motivation to kick off some of those household chores you've been putting off. Don't quite know where to begin? Here is a list to help get you started:
Rugs, carpets and floors: The winter season can reap havoc on your floors, so it's a good idea to shampoo carpets, wash area rugs and wash /wax hardwood floors. Don't forget to check those baseboards for dust!
Windows: Dust, dirt, and cobwebs can be removed with a soft brush. I recommend washing your windows (inside and out) with a mild cleaner; dry with a squeegee and then follow with a dry rag for optimum streak-free windows.
Shades and Curtains: Take down window treatments. Dust slat blinds and launder curtains and fabric shades.
Mattresses and cushions: Has it been awhile since you looked under the cushions on your couch? If so, you might be surprised at what you will find; a missing remote control or a couple dollars in change. After vacuuming, rotate and flip your mattresses and cushions.
Refrigerator and freezer: Discard any food items that are past their prime. Store remaining food in a cooler, and then wash the fridge from top to bottom with warm, sudsy water. Baking soda is a great solution for deodorizing surfaces. (Whenever working with electrical equipment it's wise to unplug it first.)
Safety Check: This is an excellent time to check the batteries in your smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector and flashlights. Batteries should be replaced every six months. Also, be sure to inspect pressure gauges on fire extinguishers.
I would like to offer one more piece of advice-while spring-cleaning your home, be sure to check for spots that may be molding. Detecting mold in the early stages makes it much easier to remedy. Be sure to clean, disinfect and dry the spots where molding has occurred to help avoid it from spreading. If not treated properly, the existence of mold in your home can cause problems. I have included a few ways to help control and remedy any existence of mold in your home. From my home to yours, happy spring-cleaning!
