If you find mold in your home it's important to address it right away. Simply cleaning the spot where mold has appeared will not prevent it from returning. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, if the mold problem is less than 10 square feet, you can handle the job yourself.
Here are a few simple tips for dealing with mold:
- Avoid direct contact with mold. Use gloves, goggles and a facemask to limit your exposure.
- Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water; make sure the surface dries completely.
- Keep indoor humidity low. Ideally humidity levels should be between 30-50%. You can purchase a moisture or humidity meter at many hardware stores for between $10-$50.
- If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes-act quickly! Dry the surface and reduce the moisture source. Condensation in your home can be a sign of high humidity.
- Vent appliances that produce moisture, such as clothes dryer, stoves, and kerosene heaters to the outside where possible.
- Run the bathroom fan or open a window when showering. Use exhaust fans or open windows whenever cooking, running the dishwasher or dishwashing.
For more information on mold related issues, contact the EPA Indoor Air Quality Information Clearinghouse at (800) 438-4318 or visit www.epa.gov/iaq/molds. If mold is consuming a space greater than 10 square feet in your home, you should contact a professional for help.
